Was ist FreeBSD ?

FreeBSD ist ein modernes Betriebssystem für x86 kompatible (einschließlich Pentium und Athlon), amd64 kompatible (einschließlich Opteron, Athlon 64 und EM64T), Alpha/AXP, IA-64, PC-98 und UltraSPARC®-Architekturen. An der Unterstützung weiterer Plattformen wird gearbeitet. FreeBSD ist eine Weiterentwicklung von BSD, dem UNIX®-Betriebssystem der University of California, Berkeley. Das System wird von einer großen Entwicklergruppe gepflegt und erweitert.
Was ist neu in FreeBSD 5 ?

Das FreeBSD 5.3-Release kennzeichnet den Beginn des “5-STABLE”-Zweiges von FreeBSD. D.h. FreeBSD 5 ist jetzt von den Entwicklern als stabil genug für den Einsatz als Produktionssystem deklariert worden, es werden voraussichtlich keine weiteren “4.X”-STABLE-Releases mehr erscheinen. Der Umstieg von 4.x-Produktionssystemen auf FreeBSD 5 kann mit Erscheinen dieser Ausgabe erfolgen, dazu ist der FreeBSD 4->5 Migrationsguide erschienen.
